Chikazoe Laboratory

The Affective Data Science Division is one of the divisions of the Brain, Mind and Kansei Sciences Research Center (BMK Center) at Hiroshima University.

Research activities in this division are led by Professor Junichi Chikazoe.

Research Objectives

Emotion is a system that links complex sensory input processing to immediate actions.

In our laboratory, we investigate the functions of human emotion, with a particular focus on its relationship with cognition, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

Specifically, by applying pattern analysis, machine learning, and related approaches to functional brain images, we estimate neural representations of information and examine how the emotional system influences the cognitive system, as well as how the cognitive system processes information originating from the emotional system.

In parallel, we develop advanced analytical methods that take advantage of the properties of high-resolution functional brain images acquired with ultra-high-field (3T and 7T) MRI scanners. Through integrated computational and psychological approaches, we aim to elucidate the functions and neural bases of emotion and, ultimately, to advance our understanding of the fundamental units of the mind.
